"Do you want soft, medium, or firm?" It's the first question anyone asks in a mattress showroom, and it's also the one most people answer wrong. Firmness isn't about what sounds nice — it's about what keeps your spine in a straight line while you sleep. Pick the wrong level and you'll wake up with a sore lower back or numb shoulders, no matter how much you spent. Here's how to get it right.
Firmness vs. Support: They're Not the Same Thing
People use these words interchangeably, but they mean different things:
- Firmness is how hard or soft the mattress feels the moment you lie down — the surface feel.
- Support is whether the mattress keeps your spine aligned and stops your hips or shoulders from sinking too far.
A good mattress can be soft and supportive at the same time. A cheap one can feel firm but still let your midsection sag. When you test a mattress, you're really checking both — does it feel comfortable, and does your back stay neutral when you relax into it?
The 1–10 Firmness Scale
Most manufacturers rate firmness on a 1-to-10 scale. In practice, almost everything sold falls between 3 and 8:
- Soft (3–4): Noticeable hug and contouring. Pressure relief for lighter sleepers and strict side sleepers.
- Medium (5–6): The most popular range. A balance of cushioning and push-back that works for most people and most sleep positions.
- Medium-Firm (6–7): Light surface comfort over a solid, stable base. A safe pick if you're not sure, and the usual recommendation for back pain.
- Firm (8): Very little sinkage. Best for stomach sleepers and heavier sleepers who need extra hold.
There's no industry standard behind these numbers, so one brand's "medium" can feel like another's "medium-firm." Use the scale as a starting point, then trust what your body tells you in the store.
Match Firmness to How You Sleep
Your sleep position decides where your body needs give and where it needs support:
- Side sleepers: Go softer — medium to medium-firm (4–6). Your shoulder and hip need room to sink in, or you'll wake up with pins and needles in your arm.
- Back sleepers: Medium-firm (6–7). You want the mattress to fill in the curve of your lower back without letting your hips drop.
- Stomach sleepers: Firm (7–8). A soft mattress lets your belly sink, which arches your spine and strains your lower back all night.
- Combination sleepers: Medium-firm (6). It's the most forgiving across positions and makes it easier to change position without waking up.
Body Weight Changes the Equation
Two people can lie on the same mattress and feel completely different things, because weight determines how far you press into the comfort layers:
- Under ~130 lbs: You won't compress a firm mattress much, so it'll feel firmer than the label says. Size down one level toward soft.
- 130–230 lbs: You'll experience firmness close to how it's rated. Follow the position guidance above.
- Over ~230 lbs: You'll sink in more, so a mattress feels softer than rated. Size up one level toward firm, and look for hybrids with a sturdy coil support core.
When Couples Disagree
This is common, and there are real fixes:
- Compromise at medium-firm. A 6 on the scale is the least objectionable choice for two people with different preferences.
- Add a topper on one side. A 2–3 inch soft topper on the side of the lighter or side-sleeping partner is the cheapest solution.
- Split-firmness or adjustable models. Some king and split-king mattresses come with different firmness on each half, or air chambers each person controls independently.
How to Test a Mattress in the Store
Lie down the way you actually sleep — not on your back for ten polite seconds. Stay there for at least five minutes per mattress. Relax completely, let your muscles go, and notice whether any single point (shoulder, hip, lower back) is carrying pressure. Slide a hand into the small of your back; if there's a big gap, the mattress is too firm, and if you can't move your hand at all, it's too soft. Roll over a few times to check how easy it is to change position.
